Description
Simonopetra Monastery and In the monastery dining-room come from the album Mont Athos. 21 bois gravés – extremely rare today – with woodcuts on upright wood by Polykleitos Rengos and a foreword by Charles Diehl (two-page text), also engraved on a woodcut plate. The album was hand-made in its entirety and came out in only 50 copies in Paris in 1934. Later, Rengos printed loose leaves independently, usually 50 on each subject from the album. The compositions are dense and rich in content, and their purpose is more to give a sense of life on Mount Athos rather than to depict the monasteries in detail.
