MALEAS Konstantinos (1879-1928) “Trees”

This painting exemplifies Konstantinos Maleas` stylistic objectives in his depictions of landscapes, especially those in which the tree plays the central role. Frequently, in the paintings of Post-Impressionists, the Fauves, the Nabis, or the Synthetists, who profoundly affected Maleas` work, trees, with the schematic possibilities offered by their wavy contours, became vehicles for research into form. In the painting that bears the simple title of `Trees`, the stylized curves of the foliage and the schematized tree trunks, which are rhythmically repeated on the semicircular ground, accentuate the decorative aspect of the composition.
