XYDIAS Nikolaos (1826-1909) “Still Life with Fruit”

Nikolaos Xydias was involved especially with the still life form, which he rendered according to the trends in French painting that emerged with the innovations brought by Chardin. Nevertheless, Xydias` paintings also contained elements of 17th and 18th century Flemish and Dutch painting, whose influence was definitive to the development of the genre. The meticulously rendered details, the particular attention to chiaroscuro, and above all the harmonious arrangement of the objects give the picture elegance. Moreover, the objects take on an esoteric dimension that opposes the grandiloquence and pretension of the Flemish Still Lifes or the extreme realism of the Dutch.
