PANTAZIS Pericles (1849-1884) “Snowy Landscape”

Snowy Landscape

Pantazis worked with complete freedom throughout his career in Belgium, while utilizing the lessons he learned from his teachers. Part of the group of realist Belgian painters, he was a regular visitor to Le repos des Artistes, the inn at Anseremme frequented by artists who did not follow any particular trend but shared who a belief in a painting free of the conventions of the past. The painting `Snowy Landscape` must be a view of Anseremme in winter, as we can conclude from other paintings of similar views of this village. Here, too, Pantazis was not interested in the accurate depiction of a specific place, but rather the rendition of the impressions of the whole through planes of pigment applied with a palette knife that achieve a near monochrome from the snowy reflections in them.
