HATZIS Vassileios (1870-1915) “Ship in a Storm”

Ship in a Storm

This painting is among the painter`s early works, as ascertained from by its date. His apprenticeship under Konstantinos Volanakis in his student years at the Athens School of Art naturally had an influence on the young painter, not only in subject matter but also in technique and compositional organization. Thus, these early works by Hatzis, which are frequently large scale, are distinguished for their academic approach to rendering the subjects and realistic style in depicting the scenes. Hatzis later went on to become involved with rendering the affects of light on objects outdoors – based on purely personal experiences since he never traveled abroad.
