GYZIS Georgios (1842-1901) “Portrait of Georgios Nazos”, 1880

Mature Urban Portraiture

This painting depicts Georgios Nazos, brother of the artist`s wife and director of the Athens Conservatory. In rather untypical pose for portraiture, the painter depicts the sitter facing sideways, on a dark ground that is nearly identical to his black suit. Only the face shines in the light and shows not only the descriptive details of the eyes, forehead, and beard, but it is also the realistic element that captures the mood of the moment. The result is that the resemblance of the portrait to the subject is revealed not as an external, superficial element but as the expression of his inner world and its spiritual content.
