MALEAS Konstantinos (1879-1928) “Naxos”

Maleas` influence on the course of Neohellenic painting was definitive in the first decades of the 20th century. The artist introduced Greece to a contemporary artistic approach, which led to modernism. Along with his investigations in color, `Naxos` shows another tendency. Here, geometric shapes and their formal potentials become objects for study. Geometric surfaces, rectangular planes, and gentle curves in foreground create the perspective of the picture. Although his simplification of forms results in separately arranged rows of planes, he achieves a synthesis through his uniform brushwork.
