SAVVIDES Simeon (1859-1927) “Kneeling Muslims”

Kneeling Muslims

Savvides was a restless, probing spirit who constantly experimented with new styles of expression that he also backed up with theory. In his extensive subject matter – genre scenes, portraiture, interiors, and, above all, images with oriental content – we encounter his innovative approach to both color as well as compositional organization. In this painting, with its loose, rapid brushwork that works to abstract the figures, the dilute color that creates transparency, the monochrome browns and reds that bathe the composition in a subtle, diffuse light, as well as the inventive circular arrangement of the forms towards the background of the picture, synopsize many of his personal accomplishments.
