MALEAS Konstantinos (1879-1928) “Kalavryta, Cliff of the Great Cave”

Kalavryta, Cliff of the Great Cave

Around 1920, Maleas abandoned his impasto brushwork, moving on to a painting that was more dominated by flat tonal juxtapositions, a factor that led to the two-dimensional image of the landscape, `Kalavryta. Cliff of the Great Cave.` A characteristic example, this painting was among those chosen after Maleas` death to represent him in the 1936 Venice Biennale.
