ECONOMOU Ioannis (1860-1931) “Kaisariani”

Economou`s earliest works bear the distinct stamp of his apprenticeship under Nikiforos Lytras at the Athens School of Fine Arts. He rapidly turned, however, toward landscape and a painting style that introduced certain Impressionist elements, such as a brighter palette, which would make him a part of the plein-air movement that prevailed in Greece in the early 20th century. The many views of the environs of Athens, such as `Kaisariani`, that Economou painted are not only examples of this liberated painting style, but also living testimony of a topographical depiction of the time of their recording.
