On the Table, 1939

The Forest of Pholloe (1937) and On the Table (1939) are two early works of Yiorgos Velissaridis. These are subjects which belong to the groups of landscapes and still lifes which date from his first period of creativity, from 1935 to around 1950. This was a time at which the artist was still exploring his capabilities in approaching a variety of subjects. Thus it is possible to distinguish a series of landscapes (Mount Athos, Karpenisi, Olympus, Roumeli, Santorini, Mytilene, Chalkida), compositions on subjects taken from life and everyday routine in the countryside (harvesting, fishing, boatbuilding, mining), and exuberant still lifes. In these groups the routes attempted in a quest for a personal style are easy to follow, and it is this, in any event, which makes these engravings so interesting.
